Not everyone knows, this is the history of t-shirts. Do you already know this? T-shirts are types of clothing that usually don't have buttons, collars, or pockets. In general, t-shirts have short sleeves (above the shoulder to elbow length) and round neck. The material commonly used to make t-shirts is cotton or polyester (or a combination of both).
Fashion t-shirts include fashion for women and men, and can be worn by all age groups, including babies, teens, or adults. T-shirts were originally used as underwear. Now t-shirts are no longer only used as underwear but also as everyday clothes.
The Origin of the T-Shirt
T-Shirt was originally used as underwear by British and US soldiers in the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. The origin of the name, T-shirt, is not known with certainty. The most common theory accepted by many people is that the name of the shirt comes from its shape that resembles the letter "T", or because military forces often use this type of clothing as "training shirts".
The general public does not recognize the use of t-shirts in everyday life. In fact, soldiers only use this shirt when the day is hot or activities that do not use uniforms. At that time there was only one color and shape which was white, there was no variation in size, collar and arm circumference.
Early Popularity of T-Shirts
T-shirt became popular when used by Marlon Brando in 1947, when he played the character Stanley Kowalsky in a theatrical performance titled "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tenesse William on Broadway, USA. The gray shirt he wore was very fitting and sticky on Brando's body, and in accordance with the character he played. In addition, in the film "Rebel Without A Cause" (1995), starring James Dean, t-shirts are increasingly popular. At that time the audience was very impressed. However, there were also those who protested, who thought that wearing a t-shirt included insults and rebellion. Inevitably, there is a polemic about t-shirts.
At that time, some people considered that the use of t-shirts as outerwear was rude and unethical. But in other circles, especially young people after the theatrical performance in 1947, they were hit by a "T-shirt fever", and even considered this as a symbol of youth freedom. And, for young people, t-shirts are not only fashion or trends, but are part of their daily lives.
Polemic increases the publicity and popularity of t-shirts in fashion. As a result, several convection companies were eager to produce t-shirts, although at first they doubted the prospect of the t-shirt business. They developed t-shirts with various shapes and colors and produced them on a large scale. The image of t-shirts increased when Marlon Brando - wearing a t-shirt combined with jeans and a leather jacket - was the star of this product.
Perhaps, because of the rise of polemics and the spread of t-shirt fever among people, in 1961 an organization calling itself "Clothing Institute" demanded that t-shirts be recognized as polite clothing like other clothing. They say, t-shirts are also fashion works that have become part of fashion culture.
Become a Youth Trend
Slowly but surely, t-shirts are starting to become part of everyday clothes that are not only used for underwear, but also as outerwear. In the mid 50's, t-shirts have started to become part of the fashion world. But it wasn't until the 60's when hippies began to dominate the world, shirts really became fashionable. As a symbol of (again) anti-establishment, these hippies use t-shirts as symbols. Since then the t-shirt revolution has taken place totally. Business activists realize that t-shirts can be a very effective and efficient promotional media. All the requirements as a good promotional media are in t-shirts. Cheap, mobile, functional, can be used as souvenirs, and so on.
At the same time, certain groups such as hippies, punk communities, or political organizations also realized that t-shirts could be perfect propaganda media in addition to pre-existing media. Any statement can be printed on it, durable, and its spread can cross boundaries that cannot be reached by other media, such as posters for example.
With all its perfection, t-shirts are no longer simple. Obviously, functional t-shirts still apply as clothes. But behind it all, t-shirts have values that exceed their basic functions. The t-Shirt design that continues to grow until now is in harmony with human development and technology that is indeed developing. History will continue to record the designs of various t-shirts like the phenomenal "I Love New York" t-shirt.
Shirt becomes the Identity of the Wearer
T-shirt design that has become a kind of actualization of the wearer, can be predicted to continue to be popular. The design element in the form of typography that is very interesting and full of meaning is very likely to be sought by the community.
Moreover, the development of the world of consumers who are very indulgent in personal actualization. Anyone can easily show who they are just by wearing a typography t-shirt or a combination of other design elements.
